The National Motor Vehicle Title Information System was established by the Department of Justice in 1992. An online system that is used for the reporting of a title’s vehicle information including title brand, lien and theft history. The benefits of this system are that:
- It gives customers greater assurance and reliability of a vehicle’s history by combining information from sources across the country (remember its national).
- It allows state titling agencies to speed up the process of titling a vehicle due to the efficiency in processing the vehicle’s history.
- Most important, it helps prevent the reintroduction of stolen vehicles and/or damaged vehicles into the hands of unsuspecting consumers.
The system can be accessed by salvage companies, tow yards, and recycling companies that are required to submit monthly reports to NMVTIS, unless they operate in a state that already requires reporting and does so on their behalf. End Users of this information can be Government entities, dealers, potential buyers, etc… These users can receive a vehicle history report by signing up with a registered NMVTIS Service provider. A report can cost between $0.50 and $15.00.
